National Sewing Month was first celebrated in 1982 after President Ronald Reagan declared September as National Sewing Month “In recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation.”
There are so many forms of “home” sewing that I can’t even begin to list them all. There is embroidery, needlepoint, cross-stitch, garment sewing, home dec, and many, many other forms of sewing.
Of course, we can’t forget quilting. However, quilting is also a complex sewing category. There is machine quilting and hand quilting. There is piecing and applique. Just think of all the different machines that are available including longarm machines. Think of the fabrics, supplies and notions that have been created just for the quilting market.
Imagine how important quilting and sewing products are to our economy and how many businesses and people are supported by the home sewing industry. Home Sewing certainly deserves its own special month.
Happy National Sewing Month,
