Template Assembly & Cutting
Download and print the Seasons Change Mini Quilt Templates by Clicking HERE.
Print it “Actual Size” in the printer settings to ensure accurate printing. You can check the size by measuring Template A, which should measure 6″ from solid line to solid line.
Cut out the templates.
To create the material for Template B, or the convex shape, start assembling the scrap fabrics you have collected by season. You can create units and sew them together, or do some improvisational sewing. Sew until you have a piece of assembled material that is 6″ x 6″, although it is fine for it to not make a perfect square, as you can see below.
Lay Template B over the assembled material and pin. Either mark and cut to avoid cutting the template, or cut carefully using scissors.
Make assembled material for each of the four seasons and cut 4 Template B pieces.
Cut 4 Template A pieces from the Dark Blue Background Fabric.
Block Assembly
The Seasons Change Mini Quilt block is made up of 4 Quarter Circle units. Here’s how to sew a quarter circle unit.
Press the concave shape (Template A) in half, right sides together. Press the convex shape (Template B) in half, wrong sides together.
Place a convex piece on top of a concave piece, right sides together, matching the center creases. Pin the center in place.
Gently bend the concave shape to match the corner of the convex shape and pin. Repeat on the other corner.
Gently pull at the fabric so the edges of the concave and convex shapes match, pinning as needed.
Sew with the convex side down, at a slow speed. It’s helpful to use a quarter inch foot and set the needle to end in the down position, if possible. Remove the pins as you sew.
Check the seam allowance and the smoothness of the curve and make any desired corrections now. Finger press first to ensure no fabric is left folded into the seam, and then set with a press of the iron. Press yours as best suits your plan. (You can clip seams if needed.)
Once the Quarter Circle Units are made, arrange the units in the seasonal order you like best, and sew together like a four-patch. Block measures 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
Applique Block Alternatives:
If you would rather applique the convex shapes, either turn under the curved seam allowance using the freezer paper method or trim off the seam allowance and fuse applique. Topstitch the convex shape to squares to make a Quarter Circle unit.
You can also sew the 4 Template B pieces together and applique them with a raw edge to a solid piece of 13″ x 13″ background, and then trim the block to 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
You can also sew the 4 Template B pieces together and use reverse applique to finish the block.
Border Assembly
Sew the 2″ squares together into 20 Four-Patch units. Unit measures 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ unfinished.
Arrange the Four-Patches any way you like around the block. Sew 4 units together for a side border, and make 2. Then sew together 6 units for a top or bottom border, and make 2.
Sew on the side borders, and then the top and bottom borders to complete the Seasons Change mini quilt top. Top measures 18 1/2″ x 18 1/2″ unfinished.
Layer the top, batting, and backing. Quilt as desired and bind using your preferred method.
