This week is QuiltWeek in Paducah, Kentucky, and it turns out to be old home week, too. Many friendships have been formed during the AQS shows over the past 29 years. People from around the world make their annual trek to Quilt City USA to enjoy the quilts and visit with their quilting buddies. Quilters are a friendly bunch and I enjoy seeing familiar faces each year as well as making new friends.
Three quilters I met on Wednesday shared their story with me. They caught my attention because of their matching hats. For some reason, a lot of quilting friends love to wear matching hats or shirts or maybe carry matching bags. But that’s another story. This story is about friendship.

Judy Armfield (Branson, Mo.), Jean McCoard (Pike County, Ohio), and Kathy O’Sullivan (Columbus, Ohio) met online in 1998. Two years later, they decided to meet in person at the AQS show in Paducah. For 13 years, they have met each year to rekindle their friendship and glean inspiration from the quilts and shop at as many vendor booths as they can. A 15-year friendship that started with the shared love of quilts continues as Judy, Jean, and Kathy make plans for their 2014 reunion.

As quilters, we know that quilts are more than just something to keep you warm on a cold winter’s night. Quilts touch our hearts, inspire our creativity, give comfort, and bring friends together. QuiltWeek in Paducah is like going home, again.
