The AQS Quilt 2018 project for August is Modern!
At the beginning of the year, you made a list of all the quilt making techniques you’d like to try in 2018 and put them in a jar. Then, you chose your own personal color of the year. You are ready!
If you missed last month’s project, check it out. We created Broderie Perse quilts.
Our style for this month is Modern.
Modern quilting style…
…as defined by MQG:
“Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.
Spring Paducah Quilt Contest defines Modern quilts as using any technique, that are inspired by modern design, often using improvisational piecing or appliqué and including bold colors, high contrast, and simple shapes on neutral backgrounds. Expansive negative space may allow the quilting to take the forefront.
Below are examples of Modern quilts from finalists in Spring Paducah Quilt Contest to inspire you:
Draw your technique from your jar, think about clever ways to play with your color of the year, and start creating.
Next week we will dive into techniques to play with. There are so many to try.
Give us a shout in the comments below letting us know your technique of choice or share with us on our Facebook group AQS Project Parade.
Let’s get started!
