Two jewels of Japan absolutely shined under the glow of the winner’s circle lights during AQS QuiltWeek™ – Paducah, Kentucky 2013. Keiko Minami and her quilt THE CHARM OF SMALL PINK ROSES, showcase the best in hand workmanship as the winner of the AQS Hand Workmanship Award.
Her quilt features a marvelous design and use of space, shapes, and quilting to accent the perfectly formed and shaded roses. Each piece in this quilt becomes one, as hexagons and triangles are put together to form the backdrop and structure on which she has placed the amazing, stuffed roses.
One of the most amazing features of her work lies in the charming roses. Through careful fabric selection and detailed piecing, her roses come to life. The perfect mix of darker colors in the center with lighter on the outside give the roses depth, further accentuated by the stuffing in her final assembly.
Now, here’s the best part…
All the fabric used in this award-winning quilt came from… Paducah! Keiko purchased every bit of fabric while in Paducah for a past show, only to turn around and win with that very same fabric this year. Congratulations Keiko!
Like many of the $10,000 prize winners at AQS QuiltWeek – Paducah, Kentucky, this masterpiece now becomes a part of the permanent collection of The National Quilt Museum.
Bonnie Browning sat down with Keiko during the show to discuss her quilt.
