Quilt blocks are magical. Even more magical is supersizing quilt blocks to make One Block Quilts! The Royal Star quilt is a single block blown up to 80″ square. This popular pattern is great for showcasing prints, color blocking with solids, and more. Easy construction makes this a fast, fun quilt to make.

by Betsey Langford
Fabric Requirements:
Dark Blue – 2 1/2 yards
Light Blue – 2 yards
White – 2 3/4 yards
Backing – 7 yards, or 2 7/8 yards of 108″ Wide Backing Fabric
Binding – 2/3 yards
Cutting Instructions:
For the Dk Blue fabric, cut:
(2) 10 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ squares
(5) 11″ x 11″ squares for small half square triangles
(4) 21″ x 21″ squares for big half square triangles
For the Lt Blue fabric, cut:
(12) 10 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ squares
(4) 11″ x 11″ squares for small half square triangles
For the White fabric, cut:
(9) 11″ x 11″ squares for small half square triangles
(4) 21″ x 21″ squares for big half square triangles
Assembly:
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the backside of each of the white half square triangle (HST) big and small squares.
For each set of the same size, lay the marked white square on the unmarked square, right sides together. Assemble as follows:
- 5 White and Dk. Blue small squares yields 10 HSTs.
- 4 White and Lt. Blue small squares yields 8 HSTs.
- 4 White and Dk. Blue big squares yields 8 HSTs.
Sew a 1/4″ seam on each side of the diagonal line.
Cut on the diagonal line.
Press the small half square triangles and trim evenly to 10½”.
Press the large half square triangles and trim evenly to 20½”.
Following the diagram below, sew the sections together and the sections into a quilt!
Assemble the backing if needed.
Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Baste.
Quilt as desired and bind using your preferred method.

Hi Susan, They are up now. Thank you for catching this! Thanks, Betsey
Does not appear to be enough light blue squares. I count 12 squares.
I count 12 light blue 10 1/2″ squRes in the pattern, not 6. What am I missing?
Hi Mary, You weren’t the one missing anything, I was 🙂 All fixed. Thanks for letting us know. Thanks, Betsey
What do you do with only 2\3 of a hard of binding don’t it to around the quilt?
Hi Mary, When making binding, I cut mine into 2 1/4″ strips, others prefer 2 1/2″ strips. (80×4=320/40=8*2.5=20) Sew the strips with a bias seam. Press and attach to the front of the quilt. I’m partial to hand stitching in place on the back. Have a great day! Thanks, Betsey
I am seeing 12 lite blue 101/2″ squares not 6
Thanks Tina! You are correct. Appreciate you letting us know! Thanks, Betsey
Looking forward to making this beautiful quilt
Great quilt
Typed 2 comments. What else fo I need?
I’m new to quilting. Can I make a 40×40 wall quilt by halving the fabric cuts?
Not exactly. You can, however, make each component half as big. For instance, the entire quilt consists of squares, HSTs (half-square triangles), and Flying Geese (2 HSTs with a large triangle between them–you can google it). If each of these were to be half as big, the entire thing would fit together nicely and be half as big.
This is a beautiful yet very quick quilt to make! I can’t wait to try it!!
For Fredna Norton: You could try making just the center star — it’s roughly half of the whole quilt, maybe a couple of inches larger. I don’t know if doing 1/2″ seams would reduce it more — I have never tried it, but I would think it would work, as long as you keep your seams consistent! I’m going to show this one to my quilt group…. we’re always looking for unusual quilts & I think a single block quilt is very intriguing.
Love the look of this quilt.
Wonderful Blog!
Congrats!
How big is this completed square ?

Do you have any suggestions for quilting this? I want to do this on my home machine.
