Cutting Instructions
From the assorted color fabrics, cut:
(3) 8″ x 8″ squares, cut in half diagonally once to make 6 triangles
From the black fabric, cut:
(6) 7″ x 7″ squares, cut in half diagonally once to make 12 triangles
From the backing fabric, cut:
(1) 13″ x 40″
Prepping the Layers
Work in a well-ventilated area on a flat surface. Place the backing fabric wrong side up on a flat surface. Lay the batting on top of the backing, making sure it is centered. Pull back the batting half way. Use the spray baste following the manufacturers instructions to baste the first half of the batting to the backing. Allow the baste to dry and repeat on the other side.
With a ruler, mark the center of the table runner to prepare for placing the first piece of fabric.
Assembly
Prepare half of the black triangles by aligning them to a larger triangle, as shown below, and trimming the excess.
Mark the long side of one of the larger triangles 1/4″ from the long edge. Align the mark on the triangle to the center mark on the table runner layers, with the triangle right sides up.
Lay a trimmed black triangle over the larger triangle, right sides together, aligning the trimmed edge to the edge of the large triangle. Sew through all the layers, using a 1/4″ sewing foot for the seam allowance. (Mark the seam allowances on the wrong sides of the material if you do not have a 1/4″ sewing foot.) Press the trimmed triangle, and repeat on the other side with an untrimmed black triangle.
This will make a Flying Geese unit with lots of room at the top. Lay the next large triangle right sides together along the top and repeat.
Follow the Assembly Guide below for the order to sew on the pieces.
Note that piece 10 will lay right sides together over the 1 piece, and the seam will be on the marked center line.
Finishing Touches & Alterations
The whole runner is quilted as it is pieced, but you can go in with more machine quilting or even hand piecing for cool effect.
To make a longer table runner, sew a longer back, use a longer piece of batting, and add as many Flying Geese units as you like.
Once the runner is just how you want it, baste stitch the sides down and trim the backing and batting even to the top. Bind using your preferred method.
