Rami Kim shows us how to make charming doll skirts and bows for our favorite dolls! In her latest book, Friendship Dolls to Sew & Quilt, Rami invites us into the wold of her Friendship Dolls where she celebrates her quilting friendships.
Skirts
Choose 2 contrasting fabrics for the skirt top and bottom. Cut a rectangle 13″ x 3½” for the top of the skirt and a rectangle 13″ x 1¾” for the bottom. Join the pieces along 2 of the long edges with a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seam allowances open. Fold the bottom edge up twice to make a ¼” hem. Topstitch to finish.
Fold the skirt piece in half with right sides together and stitch the side seam using a ¼” seam allowance. Press seam allowances open. Turn right-side out.
Fold the waist edge under a quarter of an inch. Sew running stitches 1⁄8″ from the fold, starting from the seam line in the back. Put the skirt on your doll and pull the threads to gather tightly around the waist. Distribute the gathers evenly around the waist and tack the skirt to the blouse bodice.
Bows
Cut 2 rectangles 4″ x 2½” from 1 of the bright scraps. Stitch right sides together, leaving a ¾” opening.
Trim the corners and turn right-side out; press. Gather down the middle with running stitches.
Cut 1 rectangle 1″ x 1½” from a contrasting bright scrap. Fold the sides under toward the center.
Wrap the gathered center of the bow with the folded rectangle and slipstitch on the back.
These designs are great to use for any dolls you want to dress up. Make matching out fits for little ones and their snugly friends!
