Cutting Guide:
Assembly:
Rectangles
Sew the aqua 2 1/2″ x 20″ strip to the top of the coral 2 1/2″ x 20″ strip, and press towards the aqua. Trim the end of the sewn strip to create a straight line cut, then cut four 4 1/2″ sections.
Square in a Square
Mark the wrong side of the gray 2 1/2″ squares in half once diagonally. Lay a marked square right sides together with an aqua 4 1/2″ square and sew on the marked line. Repeat on the diagonally opposite corner. Use a template of the finished center size to measure the distance and check for straight seams. Download the template here. Once satisfied, trim a quarter inch from the marked lines and press towards the aqua. Repeat on the other corners, again measuring with the template. Make 4. Unit measures 4 1/2″ unfinished.
Top and Bottom Rows
Sew a Square in a Square to the left and right side of a Rectangle unit as shown, press towards the Rectangle unit. Make 2. Row measures 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
Center Row
Sew a Rectangle unit to the left and right side of the dark teal 4 1/2″ square as shown, press towards the Rectangle units. Row measures 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
Block Assembly
Sew the rows together as shown, press towards the center. Block measures 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
To prepare the block for quilt-as-you-go, sandwich the 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ backing square, 12″ x 12″ batting centered on the backing square, and your block. Baste using preferred method. Quilt as desired inside the 12″ finished size of the block. We’ll be sharing ideas for quilting the block later in the month.
