Cutting Instructions
From the white fabric, cut:
(2) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares
(4) 1 5/8” x 1 5/8” squares
(1) 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” square
(8) 1” x 1 1/2” rectangles
(8) 3/4” x 1 1/2” rectangles
(8) 3/4” x 1” rectangles
From the red fabric, cut:
(3) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares
From the black fabric, cut:
(16) 1” x 1” squares
Assembly:
Flying Geese
Mark four white 1 5/8″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay two white marked squares over a red 2 1/2″ square in diagonally opposite corners. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press to the red.
Lay a marked white square over the corner of the red triangle. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press to the red. Repeat with the other red triangle. Trim Flying Geese to 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 4 Flying Geese.
Quarter Square Triangles
Mark the backs of the white 2 1/2″ squares in half diagonally once. Layer with the red 2 1/2″ squares, right sides together. Sew a 1/4″ on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Press seams toward the red.
Mark the backs of two of the half square triangles from corner to corner crossing the seam. Layer two half square triangles right sides together with opposite colors together. Sew a 1/4″ on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.
Unit measures 1 1/2″ square. Make 4 Quarter Square Triangles.
Corner Flip Units
Mark the wrong side of a black 1″ square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked red square, right sides together, on the left corner of a white 1” x 1 1/2″ rectangle with the marked line beginning in the top left corner.
Sew on the marked line. Trim 1/4″ seam allowance and press towards the white. Make 4.
Repeat to make two units with the red square at the right end of the white rectangle with the marked line ending in the top right corner. Press towards the black. Make 2.
Sew a Corner Flip unit to each side of a Quarter Square Triangle as shown below. make 4.
Corner Units
Sew a white 3/4″ x 1″ rectangle to the left and right side of a black 1″ square. Sew a 3/4″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle to the top and bottom to complete the corner unit.
Unit measures 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″. Make 4.
Center Unit
Sew a black 1″ square to each side of a Flying Geese unit. Make 2.
Sew a Flying Geese unit to opposite sides of a white 1 1/2″ square as shown below.
Layout the block center as shown below and sew the rows together.
Block Assembly
Sew the Corner units to each side of the Quarter Square Triangle unit. Make 2.
Sew Quarter Square Triangle units to each side of the block center.
Layout the block rows. Sew the rows together to complete the block.
Block measures 4 1/2″ square unfinished.
