Welcome back to the Big Blocks Challenge!
Need to get caught up, visit our first post to learn about the challenge and the instructions for the first block: Leaf.
As promised, here is our Leaf quilt, which I’ve titled, Leaf Pile. Without any borders, this quilt finishes to 72″ x 72″.
- Make sure the blocks are trimmed to 18 1/2″ and lay them out in rows.
- Turn them the direction shown or something completely different!
- Sew the blocks into rows and rows into the quilt.
- Stop there!
Oh, were you looking for a “quilt as desired and bind?” Nope, no such thing. Instead, stay tuned for next week when we will give you some awesome quilting ideas and free quilting patterns!
Try another colorway!

May I ask for a copy of this block
Hi Bobby. You should be able to click on the images to go to the downloadable PDF of instructions and patterns. If you cannot get these to open, let me know and I can email a PDF to you and see if that option will work. ~ Sylvia Thomas, AQS Social Media Manager
I’ve tried on multiple electronic devices,
But clicking on the image of the Leaf Block as well as the Leaf Quilt neithet opened up nor downloaded the PDF for either item.
*Is there an issue with these Web pages that they do NOT link to their respective PDFS as other #FreePattern images do?
Looks like fun!
HI Sylvia, I also cannot get the downloadable PDF from click on the image – would you be so kind as to email me a pdf – my email is roseb2007@verizon.net
Thanks, Rose
Like Bobby, I find no link to download the Leaf Pile pattern. I’ve clicked on every image on the page.
I cannot get these to open either. Please email a pdf to me. Thank you
Love the block.
Would you please email me the PDF file for Leaf Pile.
I can’t find where to download. The image just gets larger. Please help
Hi, I haven’t cut mine yet, but notice that the block is 18″ on the pattern and 18 1/2″ on the recent page that tells you to size them up to 18 1/2″. Does the pattern make them big enough for 18 1/2?
Hi Candi,
18″ is the finished size for the block, this refers to the size of a block once it is sewn into a quilt. Before it is sewn into the quilt it has an extra 1/2″ from the seam allowances. In answer, yes, the block instructions are 1/2″ unfinished so the blocks are sized to 18 1/2″. Feel free to email if I can be of help. betsey.langford@americanquilter.com
I would also like to make the block and this layout, when I click on the images there is no link to a PDF … ??? Can you email the PDFs to me also? Thanks in advance !
I don’t see any other links to print the block pattern (last weeks) or for this quilt layout?
For those wanting to download a PDF of the instructions, we are getting that loaded for you. I apologize for the confusion. I got ahead of our designer on this one and she is taking care of it today and getting the PDF loaded for you. Please check back. ~ Sylvia Thomas, AQS Social Media Manager
Please click the quilt image to download the pdf. It is now available.
Thanks, Sylvia! Clicking on the block image takes you right to the downloadable instructions!
I just clicked on the image and was able to print all four pages – today is Sept. 14th, and maybe the pdf. took some time to come available.
10-16-16 and it downloaded in a jiffy. What a great fall quilt, these are the best — NO RAKING 🙂
