Amelia’s Star Quilt
Fabric Requirements
Background – 2⅓ yards
Red – 1 yard
Navy – 1 yard
Sky Blue – 1 yard
Light Blue – ¼ yard
Binding – ½ yard
Cutting Instructions
(42″ usable fabric assumed)
From the background fabric, cut:
(1) 20½″ x 20½″
(4) 20½″ x 10½″
(16) 10½″ x 10½″
From the red fabric, cut:
(4) 20½″ x 10½″
(4) 5½″ x 5½″
From the navy fabric, cut:
(8) 10½″ x 10½″
From the sky blue fabric, cut:
(4) 20½″ x 10½″
(4) 5½″ x 5½″
From the light blue fabric, cut:
(4) 5½″ x 5½″
Assembly
Flying Geese
Mark the wrong side of a background 10½″ square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a red 20½″ x 10½″ rectangle, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼″ seam and press.
Repeat on the other side with another marked background 10½″ square.
Unit measures 20½″ x 10½″ unfinished. Make 4 background/red Flying Geese units.
Repeat the same process to make 4 navy/sky blue Flying Geese units measuring 20½″ x 10½″ unfinished.
Sew a background/red Flying Geese unit to the to a navy/sky blue Flying Geese unit, oriented as shown below.
Repeat to make 4 Double Flying Geese units measuring 20½″ x 20½″ unfinished.
Corner Patch Units
Mark the wrong side of a red and a light blue 5½″ square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked squares right sides together with a background 10½″ square, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked lines. Trim ¼″ seams and press.
Repeat to make 4 Corner Flip units measuring 10½″ x 10½″ unfinished.
Sew a background 10½″ square to a Corner Flip unit, oriented as shown below. Press and then sew a 20½″ x 10½″ rectangle to the top.
Repeat to make 4 Outer Corner units measuring 20½″ x 20½″ unfinished.
Center Flip Unit
Mark the wrong sides of the sky blue 5½″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay the marked squares right sides together with a background 20½″ square, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked lines. Trim ¼″ seams and press.
Make 1 Center Flip unit measuring 20½″ x 20½″ unfinished.
Row A
Arrange 2 Corner Patch units and a Double Flying Geese unit, as shown below. Sew into a row.
Row A measures 20½″ x 60½″ unfinished. Make 2.
Row B
Arrange 2 Double Flying Geese units and a Center Flip unit, as shown below. Sew into a row.
Row B measures 20½″ x 60½″ unfinished. Make 1.
Quilt Assembly
Arrange the rows as shown below. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.
Quilt measures 60½″ x 60½″ unfinished. Quilt as desired and bind using your preferred method.
