Certified Quilt Judge Scott Murkin discusses the quilt judging process with AQS Executive Show Director Bonnie Browning. Hear about the “Wow!” factor, choosing Best of Show, and some of the specific criteria used when judging. Scott discusses initial screenings (including photographs) and drops some hints about having your quilt among those that are juried into quilt contests.
What’s it like from his side of the quilt? Quilt judges have to make some very hard choices!
I appreciated Scott’s interview about judging quilts. Recently I entered a small applique quilt at my guild’s annual show and won a Judges Merit Award. However, after striving to improve my applique workmanship the judge had no comment, critique, or compliment. Her only word for her reason was”embellishment”! As an award winning quilter for years I would have appreciated more feedback.
Thanks for such an articulate and intelligent discussion of quilt judging. I learned a lot, as well as getting a delightful glimpse of two lovely individuals’ personalities. This was very helpful.
