Leaf Points – four scraps of at least 7″
Leaf Body – one scrap of at least 13″
Background – 5/8 yard
Cutting Instructions
Leaf Points –
(4) 7″ squares
Leaf Body –
(1) 13″ square
Background –
(1) 6 1/2″ square
(4) 7″ squares
(1) 13″ square
Assembly Instructions
- Using the leaf point squares and background squares, make half square triangles. Size to 6 1/2″.
- Using the leaf body square and the background square, make a half square triangle. Size to 12 1/2″.
- Sew the Leaf block together.

- Make sure the blocks are trimmed to 18 1/2″ and lay them out in rows.
- Turn them the direction shown or something completely different!
- Sew the blocks into rows and rows into the quilt.
Here are two ideas for quilting Leaf Pile, one focuses on straight stitch, while the other offers a meandering swirl.
Here is Leaf Pile with straight quilting every 1″.
A few tips to get you started:
- Start with the diagonal lines going from corner to corner and meeting in the center. Then quilt the long lines that follow a seam (ditch) from one side of the quilt to the other. This will help stabilize the quilt.
- Use repositionable tape to mark the 1″ lines.
- Sew ever other line in one color and come back with a different color to fill in the lines in the gap. A metallic would be striking!
Here is Leaf Pile with a continuous line quilt design. Those gusts of wind sure do scatter the leaves!
Take a look at the pattern and practice backtracking to pick up all the swirls.
This sample is a tile, but the idea is basic and can be used to meander over any size area. This pattern also lends itself to covering large areas quickly.
